I have been struggling to hold books when reading. I am developing arthritis in my hands. I have tried book pillows and other bookstands, but this one is by far the best. It isn’t perfect, but none of the available bookstands seem to solve the problems I see. Overall, I highly recommend this bookstand. I bought the extralarge bookstand in black (I mistakenly thought it would be all black; the black or white refers solely to the color of the panel on which the book lies). The bookstand is very lightweight. It takes very little strength to carry/move it. This is a positive, especially as one gets older. One “failing” is that the bottom arms are not lightly weighted at the tips to ensure that when a book is being held there is a counterweight to the book’s weight. The weights don’t need to be heavy weights, but they need to be at least a couple of ounces.A second “failing” is that there is a slight lip on which books can be caught. It is the natural edge that occurs from the wrapping of the backboard. Once I became aware of it, I could compensate for it, but it would have been a better design if the desktop was a single piece with no wrapping.A third “failing” is the design and placement of the clips that hold the book. There really should be 3 clips, not 2. I read hardcover books and not all hardcover books are the same. I want the books held open without breaking the spine. With 2 clips it can be done but not as well as it could be done with 3 clips. In addition, the place where the book rests on the clips should be flat, not round. A third clip would also be useful for books that use endnotes. These “failings” are really very minor complaints. I read multiple books at a time, generally 2 nonfiction and 1 fiction, and I have found it easy to switch books and to accommodate books of different sizes and weights (the biggest problem being the lip mentioned earlier). One book I am currently reading is more than 1,000 pages and the bookstand handles it easily.Even adjusting the angles is easy. If I had to pick one thing that I would absolutely recommend be done to the bookstand in a future redesign, it would be to change the angle-adjusting buttons from push-in buttons to raised twist buttons. But even the push-in buttons are easy to use and easy to push in.There is another version of this bookstand available; it has 3 arms rather than 2 arms per side. However, it doesn’t have the clips. If your need is for book reading, the third arm is unnecessary as the stand will be too high. More important, however, are the clips. The clips carefully hold a book on the stand; the 3-arm stand that I looked at didn’t have clips and relied on a shelf that was not adjustable. This 2-arm stand is not only less expensive but better suited for book reading than the 3-arm stand. As I wrote, my complaints are really minor complaints that would make an excellent bookstand more excellent.
